Why You may not be able to Access Fon is Fun from Time to Time:
Dear Fan of Fon is Fun,
As you may have noticed, this web page does not have its own domain name nor does it have full service hosting. What that means is the web address is not www.fon_is_fun but is hosted as a sub domain of Geocities.com. As I do not generate income from this site, I also do not want to spend money to maintain it. I do get a 5% commission from Amazon.com on all purchases when buyers arrive there through one of my links, however over the last year I have only earned about $4.00....Not so hot. Because my goal is to neither earn money nor spend money on this site, I have chosen Geocities to host it because it is free. The downside is the advertising and limits on the amount of data transfer.
Geocities as of late has been trying to sell their "For Pay" premium web hosting services and is putting pressure on their free websites like Fon is Fun to convert to these for pay services. They do this my limiting the amount of data transfer per month to 3 gigabytes. What this means is that if too many people use the site on a given day or say one person is really excited about learning Fon and downloads lots of .wav files, Geocities temporarily shuts down the website. When this happens Geocities lets me know. (See their letter below) Now it is happening only about three times a month, but as Fon is Fun grows in popularity this may become more of an issue.
What Can I Do to Help?
Yea- you guessed it.- Send money. I am starting a collection that would go directly to paying for web hosting. Geocities most basic package would be adequate to start off. It would offer for $4.95 a month:
| GeoCities
Plus |
The main advantage to you the user would be the higher data transfer amount preventing the website from being shut down and of course none of that annoying advertising. Before I converted the web page to this pay service I will want to have collected one year's fees up front or approximately $70. If you would like to see these enhancements e-mail me at cstarace@yahoo.com and I'll send you my mailing address where you can send a check. I will keep you posted as to the amount collected from time to time and will refund your money if after 6 months I have not collected the a total of $70.
Letter From Geocities about Data Transfer:
Dear GeoCities Member,
Your web site, http://www.geocities.com/fon_is_fun
seems to have been receiving a large amount of traffic.
Our records indicate that you're using more than the allotted amount
of data transfer we provide for a free web site, which is 3 gigabytes
per month (measured on an hourly basis). That means that during the
past few days we had to temporarily turn your site off to keep the
bandwidth within this limit.
What can I do?
Keep in mind that large files such as images and multimedia files
can effect your data transfer greatly. A single web page that
contains 200,000 bytes of images will only be able to be viewed
about 20-25 times an hour. By keeping your file sizes and page
sizes as small as possible, you can maximize the amount of page views
your site can produce.
You can also upgrade your site to one of our premium services,
GeoCities Pro or GeoCities Webmaster. These packages allow for 10 and
20 gigabytes of data transfer per month, and also give you the option of
purchasing unlimited data transfer so your site will always be accessible.
These packages also enable you to run an ad-free site at your own
domain name (for example, www.fon_is_fun.com)
and get matching email
accounts at that domain (like you@fon_is_fun.com).
Upgrading your
current site is simple -- you don't have to move any files and your
geocities.com/fon_is_fun address will continue to work.
For more information about our new packages, please visit

If you'd prefer not to receive this notice in the future, just go to
http://geocities.yahoo.com/opt/bwemail
to take your name off of the notify
list. Of course, our servers will continue to monitor your site's data
usage and turn it off if it exceeds the limits.
